Living Within Nature
Woodhaven Bend Restores Earth and Harmony
By Trish Stukbauer • Photography courtesy of Restore-Earth
Most of us have experienced the visual delight of a crisp autumn day in the country, driving along winding mountain roads to view the amazing colors that nature’s palette paints on leaves gently falling from towering trees. Now imagine how different your experience of that day would be if you were to relive your childhood by hiking and exploring nature with 200-year-old oak trees towering above. Watching a songbird alight on a nearby branch and then listening as it strikes the perfect note. Hearing the water rushing over river rapids. Breathing the clean, moist morning mist. Tasting the tart goodness of apples fresh from a nearby tree. In essence, living within nature.

There are few moments in life as relaxing and rejuvenating as those spent listening to the roar of the surf at the beach, the song of the marsh birds in coastal inlets, or the swoosh of a golf ball as it lands on a perfectly manicured green. To take full advantage of all that the coastal south has to offer, many Atlantans are opting for second homes at the beach. In our St. Simons Island office, we specialize in creating beautiful and enduring designs for varied needs and lifestyles.

The Evolution of Second Homes and Classical Architecture
By Brittany Duque • Photography courtesy of Walter Elliott
When Henry Morrison Flagler visited Jacksonville, Florida, in the late 1800s it was clear to him that Florida was the perfect refuge from the bitter elements of northern winters. However, what Florida lacked were the facilities to accommodate the anxious snow birds and the transportation to get them there. Over the next 20 years, Flagler built hotels and purchased existing railroad routes, eventually extending them to service areas such as Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona, Palm Beach and Miami, causing resort communities to appear sequentially as the railroad traveled south.

By Carl Seville

Your second home is an excellent place to look for energy savings, whether you’re building or renovating. Much of the energy use in a house occurs when it is not occupied, so finding ways to eliminate unnecessary consumption is time (and money) well spent. In addition to reducing energy use, many green building principles will help reduce maintenance and extend the life of your vacation home.

Got to Get Away?
Outdoor Living for “Stacations” or Second Homes
By Dino Luckino • Photography courtesy of Georgia Backyard, Inc.
The last thing most Americans are planning to do these days is travel too far. The crazy difference between the U.S. dollar and the Euro, almost 1.60 today, makes that trip to Paris or Rome seem like an unnecessary luxury. Factor in the high price of gas and airline tickets, which just increases the cost and hassle of travelling, and it’s no surprise that more Atlanta residents are choosing “stacations” by electing to vacation at home or opting for vacation homes that are not too far afield.

Family Tradition
Furnishings That Stand the Test of Time
By Trish Stukbauer • Photography courtesy of Gregg Willett
The year was 1960. After a long career as a top furniture salesman in Nashville, Virgil Patterson accepted a position with a Georgia department store to be closer to his family, and he and his wife Rosalie sold their home and moved to Atlanta. When he showed up for work, the store “unhired” him because they thought that at the tender age of 60, he was too old to sell furniture. That move will surely enter the annals of bad business decisions, since shortly thereafter at the urging of their daughter, Patricia Sealy, the couple invested their life savings in a small furniture store they launched in Chamblee.

Wrought Iron Within Reach
By Blake Warenik • Photography courtesy of Castle Entries
Once upon a time, wrought-iron doors and fixtures were designed to order and hand forged, one by one, by skilled artisans: men who smelled of blazing charcoal fires and had disproportionately swollen right arms. These disciples of Hephaestus (the Greek god of fire) were strong enough to bend a rod of solid iron as thick as a spear into a perfect circle, but gentle enough to hammer thin iron sheets into delicate, lifelike leaves and flowers.
